e are landed largequantities of coal from the Liverpool ves-sels that come here to load with grain. Thecoal is brought for ballast, more than forprofit. Rattlesnake Island is in front of the har-bor—sand principally San Pedro Pointis two miles south, and Point Fermin,around that point to the west, reached bywagon-road around the beach or over thebluffs, six miles distant. DeadmansIsland is a small,isolated rocky peak, wherecommences the breakwater improvementbelow Point Pedro. Fermin Point is on the most prominentheadland on the west, surmounted with alight of the first order, (which is kept bytwo ladies.) Near this point, in stone, isthe subject of our illustration, below,called San Pedros Wife or the WomanOF THE Period. The distance from Wilmington bysteamer to San Francisco is 387 miles; toSan Diego, 95 miles; to Santa CatalinaIsland, 20 miles. This Island is ow^ned bythe Lick estate, is 35 miles long and tenwide, on which are some gold mines, andgreat numbers of sheep and goats.
