Although theplateau is covered with grass, and occa-sional shrubs and stunted trees greet theeye, the surrounding bleakness and deso-lation render this place one of awful gran-deurv The hand of Him who rules theuniverse is nowhere else more marked, andin no place will the tourist feel so utterlyalone, so completely isolated from man-kind, and left entirely with nature, as atSherman, on the Black Hills of Wyoming. At the first the tourist experiences muchdifficulty in breathing, the extreme light-ness of the air trying the lungs to their ut-most capacity, but becoming accustomedto the change, and inhaling long draughtsof the pure mountain air, will greatly pre-fer it to a heavier atmosphere. Fish and Game—There is no spot alongthe line of road which can be compared tothe locality around Sherman for trout fish-

PALISADES of the HUMBOLDT RIVER, C. P. R.R. 80 crofutts new ovekland toukist ing. The tiniest rivulets swarm with them,and their speckled sides glisten in everyeddy. They weigh from one-fourth to twopounds, and their flesh is as hard andwhite as that of the mountain trout ofVermont. Antelope, elk, black-tailed deer, bear,sage hens and grouse abound in the hillsand on the plateaus. The angler, hunter,or tourist should never pass Sherman with-out pausing long enough to fly a hook andtry his rifle. Doubtless this point will be-come a favorite summer resort for travelers,when the hotel accommodations are suchas to entice them to remain, as it possesseseminent attractions for hunting and fishing. From Sherman to Rawlins, 160 miles,the road runs between the Black Hills andthe Rocky Mountain range, presentingvaried and impressive scenery at variouspoints. Leaving Sherman, the road turns to theleft, and passes through several long snow-sheds and deep rock cuts to Dale Creek Bridge—Dale Cree
