To the * telegraph is at-tached a hose with an iron pipe, or nozzle, through which the water rushes with greatvelocity. When directed against a gravelbank, it cuts and tears it down, washingthe dirt thoroughly, at a rate astonishingto those unacquainted with hydraulic min-ing. (See accompanying illustration.) Thewater carries rocks, dirt and sand throughthe tail race, and into the long flumes, where the riffles for collecting the gold areplaced. HYDRAULIC MINING. 176 CROFUTT S NEW OVERLAND TOURIST can see, on every hand, the miners work.Long flume beds, which carry off thewashed gravel and retain the gold; longand large ditches full of ice-cold water, which, directed by skillful hands, are fasttearing down the mountains and sendingthe washed debris to fill the river-beds inthe plains below. There are a set of pipes busily playing against thehill-side, which often comes down inacres. All is life, energy and activity. We dont see many children peeping outof those cabins, for they are not so plentfulin the mining districts as in Salt Lake. But we do see nearly all of the cabins sur-rounded with little gardens and orchards, which produce the finest of fruits. Descending the mountain rapidly, amidmining claims, by the side of large ditches, through the deep gravel cuts, and alongthe grassy hill-sides, until, on the left, aglimpse of the North Fork of the Ameri-can River can be had, foaming and dash-ing along in a narrow gorge full 1,50
