She once made a tripacross the bay, loaded, running a distanceof three and a half miles in 22 minutes.The boat is 260 feet on deck, 38 feet beam,with flat bottom. The engines are 200horse power; cylinders, 22x84, and were con-structed at the companys shops in Sacra-mento. The south slip is the passenger slip,where lands the regular ferry-boat betweenOakland and San Francisco. On eachside of this slip is a passenger-house—one30x70 feet, the other 40x50 feet. In thesebuildings are located the division offices ofthe Railroad Company. They aflbrd ampleaccommodations for passengers, and theenormous travel, the advance guard ofwhich has only just commenced to arrive. The first ship that loaded at this pierwas the Jennie Eastman, of Bath, Eng-land. She commenced loading August4tli, 1870, for Liverpool, with wheat,brought—some from San Joaquin Yalley,but the greater portion from the end of theCalifornia and Oregon railroad, 230 miles

It is hardly understood yet by the peopleof the world, that the China, Japan, Sand-wich Island, and Australian steamships,and ships both large and small, can landat this pier, load and unload from and intothe cars of the Pacific railroad; and thosecars can be taken through, to and from theAtlantic and Pacific Ocean,without change;that immense quantities of goods are nowtransported in that way, much of them inBOND, in one-tenth the time heretofore oc-cupied by steamships and sailing vessels.When these facts are fully understood,and the necessary arrangements made,the rush of overland freight traffic willcommence, the extent of which, within thenext twenty je^x^.feio^ if any, can realize. From the landing place of the Thorough-fare, in San Francisco, a rail track leadsto the dock of the Pacific mail, and otherocean steamships, and goods are nowtransferred in that way in bond,
