are 15 quartz mills in thecounty, and 36 companies owning canalsor mining ditches, one of which cost$500,000, and with its branches is over 150miles long. There are regular stage lines from Marys-ville to Colusa, 29 miles west; Downieville,67 miles northeast; North San Juan, 38miles; Grass Valley, 35 miles: La Porte, 65miles from Marysville. The Northern California. R B. This road branches ofifor Oroville, north,and runs to the eastward of Feather Kiver,through Honcut, a small place, and arrivesat Oroville,after arun of 26 miles. This townhas a population of about 1,500, and is thecounty seat of Butte county. It is an oldmining town, principally placer mines,which were at one time very rich, and insome places now are worked to advantage.The Chinese are very thick in the old pla-cer region, and work these old diggingsover and over again.
