To say that wine flowed freely would.convey but a faint idea of the good feelingmanifested and the provision made by eachcompany for the entertainment of theirguests, and the celebration of the event. Immediately on the completion of thework, a charge was made on the last tie(not the silver-plated, gold-spiked laurel,for that had been removed and a pine tiesubstituted) by relic hunters, and soon itwas cut and hacked to pieces, and thefragments carried away as trophies or me-mentoes of the great event. Even one of thelast rails laid in place was cut and batteredso badly that it was removed and anothersubstituted. Weeks after the event wepassed the place again, and found an enthu-siastic person cutting a piece out of thelast tie laid. He was proud of his treasure—that little chip of pine—for it was a pieceof the last tie. We did not tell him thatthree or four ties had been placed theresince the first was cut in pieces. 136 ckofutts new overland.
