ontin-uing down the river 20 miles we come to Ross Fork.—This is a small station onthe river of the same name. The landsare mostly covered with sage brush, veryrich, and with irrigation, water for whichis abundant—could be made very produc-tive. Stock raising is about the only occu-pation the few settlers are engaged in. The direction of our road from thispoint is north; thirteen miles brings us tothe end of the road, at Blackfoot—named for the BlackfootIndians, has a population of about 350(March 1879). It has several hotels, storesof various kinds, a bank, express, telegraph,freight, and stage offices. It is situated ona broad sage-covered plain, with the Black-foot River one mile to the south; theSnake, about one mile to the northwest,marked by a dense growth of cottonwoodand willows. Placer Mines—The reported discov-eries of rich placer mines of fine goldalong Snake River in the summer of 1878,created quite an excitement in theminingcamps of the Pacific Slope, and hundreds

The Salmon River Mines—are 200miles northwest from Blackfoot, are veryextensive, and very rich. Besides the Pla-cer mines there are rich veins of ore worthfrom $300 to $2,000 per ton. FilEiGHT —The Diamond-R.-line reportsthe receipts of freight, to be forwarded toMontana and the Salmon River mines, for1878, to be 8,121 tons; received in ore andbullion from the same, 3,021 tons. Express—The Express Co. report theamount of gold received by them from themines, and forwarded for the month of Oct.,1878, to be $3,716,592, which they say isabout a fair average for the year.
