The public buildings include a jailand court-house, seven churches, and somefine school-houses. Also a fine operahouse. The Occidental is the principalhotel. Eight years ago we said: Itwas a thriving place in the midst ofa beautiful country. Now it is a cityof no mean pretentions. Within the pasteight years there has been built nearlyeight hundred dwelling houses, with storesof all kinds in proportion. All of thisbeautiful country has been taken up andoccupied by thrifty farmers, who are reap-ing an abundant reward for their labor. The Herald, a daily and weekly, and theTribune—weekly, are the newspapers pub-lished here. The Sioux City & Pacific R. R. con-nects here with the U. P. and runsthrough to Mo. PACIFIC COAST GUIDE. 29 It is claimed this route is 33 milesshorter to Chicago than via Omaha, but wedo not know of any through travel evergoing by this line, and judge the localtravel to be its sole support. The Fremont & Elkhorn Valley rail-road to the northward is completed toWisner, about 50 miles, and trains are run-ning regularly. This road runs through avery rich and well cultivated country,where wheat yields as high as 30 bushelsto the acre. Fremont is connected with the southside of the Platte by a wagon bridge thatcost over $50,000. The Platte River—We are now goingup the Platte, and for many miles we shallpass closely along the north bank; at othertimes, the course of the river can only betraced by the timber grov/ing on its banks.Broad plains are the principal features,skirted in places with low abrupt hills,which here, in this level country, rise tothe dignity of bluffs.
