Georgetown is the county seat of ClearCreek county, has a population of 3,500,and some very good business blocks; onebank, numerous stamp mills and oresampling and reduction works, fivechurches, good schools, two weekly news-papers—the Miner and the Courier—andquite a number of hotels, chief of whichare the Barton, the Phelps and the Ameri-can. The Barton is one of the best housesin Colorado, and, together with its *Annexopposite, is capable of accommodating200 guests. Masonic, Odd Fellows andother secret orders have their halls formeetings. Gas works supply the townwith illuminating facilities, and water—the finest in the world—is conducted inpipes from a mammoth reservoir, 500 feetabove the city, which affords great protec-tion in case of fire. There are a number of little towns andmining camps near Georgetown, chief ofwhich are Silver Plume, Brownville andSilver Dale, from two to three miles dis-tant. One remarkable fact exists—and we have

FOREST VIEW—THE FOOT HILLS OF CALIFORNIA, it on good authority—that the thermometernever has been known to mark more thanfour degrees below zero in the city ofGeorgetown. Situated as it is, this city, atthe head of the valley, walled in on threesides by lofty mountains, which protect itfrom the wind and storms, the air is ofgreat purity, and the climate mild. The first discovery of silver in this re-gion, was made by James Huff, Sept. 14th,1864; the location is about eight milesabove Georgetown. The Georgetown people boast of a bit ofscenery, about ten minutes walk from thehotel, called the Devils Gate and Bridal Vail.
