Description

Southern slopes of Monte Sejeu (Municipality of Ceranesi, Metropolitan City of Genoa, Liguria, IT). Latitude (WGS84): 44.5030 N. Longitude (WGS84): 8.8184 E. Elevation: 878 m (2880 ft) Date: October 8, 2022. --- TAXONOMICAL INFORMATIONS Familia: Iridaceae Juss. Species: Crocus ligusticus Mariotti First publication references: Candollea 43: 674 (1988). Synonyms: Crocus medius auct. --- MORPHOLOGY AND FENOLOGY Life-form: geophyte. Description (D.A. Webb, 1980): perennial herb with bulb-tuber (corm). Corm-tunic fibrous, reticulate and bristly at the apex; corm capped with a neck of old cataphylls. Leaves (2-3) 2,5-4 mm wide, absent at anthesis. Flowers 1(-2), lilac to deep purple with darker veins; throat white, glabrous. Prophyll present. Bracteole absent; bract membranous, white, sometimes greenish or brownish at apex, well-exserted from the cataphylls. Perianth-tube 4-20 cm, white, tinged with lilac or purple towards the apex; segments (2-)2,5-5 x (0,7-)1,2-1,7 cm, oblanceolate or obovate, subacute to mucronate. Anthers deep yellow. Style deep orange to scarlet, equalling or exceeding the stamens, dissected into many spreading branches. Capsule c. 1,3 cm, ellipsoid; seeds reddish-brown, subglobose-ellipsoid. Flowering: from September to November. --- ECOLOGY AND CHOROLOGY Habitat: clear woods, coppices, colline and montane meadows and prairies. Vegetation belts: mesomediterranean; supramediterranean; submediterranean; colline; montane. Edaphic preferences: Ca; Ser. Chorotype: Ligurian Endemite. Global distribution (POWO, 2022): France; Italy. Italian distribution (F. Bartolucci & alii, 2018): native in Piedmont, Liguria, Emilia Romagna. IUCN global Status: NT. Notes: the distributional range of Crocus ligusticus Mariotti extends from the Prealps of Nice (above Èze and in the Bevera Valley on Mont Forquin) through the mountains of Liguria and southern Piedmont to the central part of the Province of La Spezia (hills above Levanto) and to the south-western part of the Province of Parma in Emilia Romagna.
