Summary

[edit]
Description

Familia: Iridaceae Juss. Species: Crocus ligusticus Mariotti Original publication details: Candollea 43: 674 (1988). Synonyms: Crocus medius auct. non Balbis Common names: zafferano ligure (IT); Ligurian Saffron (EN).

Location: Giutte (Municipality of Mele, GE, LIG, IT). Elevation: 410 m (1345 ft). Date: October 21, 2018. Status: native. Chorotype: Subendemic

Note: Crocus ligusticus is a subendemic species, whose range includes the southern extremity of the Maritime Alps (Nice Prealps), the Ligurian Alps and the Ligurian Apennines.

In Italy Crocus ligusticus Mariotti is recorded in southern Piedmont (in Tanaro basin and in Bormida basin). In Liguria, where it is quite widespread and quite common, although with large distribution gaps (absent in the north-eastern sector of the region). In Emilia Romagna (only two stations recorded in the Taro river basin). Despite a superficial resemblance to Crocus nudiflorus Smith (Iberian Peninsula, south-western France) from the genetic point of view Crocus ligusticus Mariotti is closer to Crocus banaticus Heuff. and in Crocus malyi Vis. (Central and Southern Balkans). It grows in the prairies, in the pastures, in the uncultivated fields and in the luminous woods from the hilly strip next to the coast to the lower limit of the subalpine belt. It prefers marly-limestone or ultramafic substrates.
