Description
Italiano: Cristo crocifisso dolente. È, secondo la tradizione, proveniente dalla Chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello e risalirebbe all'XI secolo, ma i caratteri stilistici inducono a posticipare la datazione al XV secolo. Nella Cattedrale antica di Alessandria, demolita per decreto napoleonico del 1803, era collocato nell'andito della porta laterale sinistra come risulta dalle Visite dei vescovi M. Arboreo Gattinara ( 1730) e G. T. De Rossi (1760) "transitus undeque depictus qui ducit extra Ecclesiam, ineoque visitavit Simulacrum SS. mi Cricifixi"; è menzionato nello stesso luogo nell'Inventario degli arredi della Cattedrale redatto nell'occasione della demolizione. La collocoazione nella nuova Cattedrale risale al 1810, anno della sua inaugurazione. Il Crocifisso fu rivestito in lamina di rame dall vita in giù nel XVIII secolo per proteggerlo dai fedeli che asportavano frammenti per devozione personale.
