Summary
[edit]DescriptionCrinan Canal Lock - geograph.org.uk - 1230593.jpg |
English: Crinan Canal Lock This is the westmost lock of the 15 sets of locks in the 9 mile long canal.
Beyond the lock is the Crinan Basin where ships gather before proceeding through the canal or leaving for sea on the west coast at Loch Crinan. The famous engineer John Rennie was responsible for the design and the canal was opened in 1801 saving a long and hazardous voyage around the Mull of Kintyre for small vessels. However early problems led to Thomas Telford being employed to rectify matters and it was fully operational in 1816. |
