35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Passeriformes; Family: Laniidae; Genus: Laniarius; Genus species: Laniaurius atrococcineus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 23 cm; Habitat: Open forests; Diet: Carnivore: insects, small vertebrates; Reproduction: Shrikes start pairing off in the late winter. They usually rear at least two broods each year. Three to six eggs are laid each time. The incubation period is 14 to 16 days; Social Structure: Shrikes are conspicuous birds; they do not mind sitting in open spaces; Behavior: Shrikes are the most truly predatory perching birds. They kill their prey with their sharply hooked beaks; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Their habit of impaling their prey into thorns has earned them the name 'butcherbird.'.
