NPS/Patrick Myers Visitors are often surprised that some of the highest and most rugged peaks in the United States are found above Great Sand Dunes. Six mountains over 13,000 feet (4,000 m) are located in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and eight mountains over 14,000 feet (4,300m) rise just north and south of the park. For most visitors, the unexpected juxtaposition of snowy alpine peaks, dunes, and flowing streams creates an emotional response of awe and wonder! |
