Svenska: Cray Research lanserade Cray-1 1976 och kom att bli den första så kallade superdatorn. Detta exemplar, serienummer 09, tillverkades 1976 och såldes till European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts i Reading i England, en organisation där bl.a. Sverige är medlem. 1983 såldes den vidare till Saab Aerospace i Linköping för 29,9 Mkr där den användes för hållfasthetsberäkningar och aerodynamiska beräkningar under utvecklingsarbetet av JAS Gripen. Genom ett avtal med Naturvetenskapliga Forskningsrådet (NFR) ställdes en del av datorkraften till universitetsforskares förfogande. Den årliga driftskostnaden var 12 Mkr. Merparten av kretskorten togs ur och destruerades i samband med att datorn togs ur drift 1989, vilket var ett krav från Cray för att förhindra teknikspridning till öststatsländer. Cray Research donerade den till Linköpings Universitet 1989 där den länge stod utställd. Senare flyttades den till datormuseet IT-ceum i Linköping där den stod utställd utanför entrén fram till sommaren 2007. Cray-1 har genom sina tillämpningar haft stor betydelse för forskning och utveckling. Dess överlägsna prestanda höjde ribban avsevärt och skyndade på datorutvecklingen. Totalt såldes 85 Cray-1 varav två har funnits i Sverige. Cray Research är alltjämt verksamma och fortsätter utveckla superdatorer. |
