Description

Dreimühlen Wasserfall, Nohn, Kalkeifel, Rheinland-Pfalz, Deutschland.

Cratoneurum commutatum, class: Bryopsida, subclass: Bryidae.

English: A moss, assimilating its carbon dioxide from mineral spring water (ex. Karstwater, saturated with calcium carbonate). As a result, part of the mineral precipitates chemically. Plant and mineral form to a crust, a porous, stable and extremely lightweight rock sediment, which may grow to become huge elivated deposits. The plant grows anew on the crust.
Deutsch: Ein Astmoos, das sein Kohlendioxid aus Karstwasser (kalksaturiert), statt aus der Luft assimiliert. Die chemisch ausfallende Kalkteilmenge verkrustet die Pflanze zu einem porösen Sediment, welches zu gewaltigen Kalktuffbarren anwachsen kann, weil die Pflanze auf den Kalkkrusten weiterwächst.
