[edit]DescriptionCrash Cover Nov 2 1929.jpg |
English: Partially burned "crash cover" carried on the regular evening Southbound Air Mail flight of USPOD CAM #24 which departed Maywood Field, Chicago, IL, on schedule at 9:00PM, November 2, 1929, for Cincinnati, OH, via Indianapolis, IN. Pilot Charles Vermilyea miscalculated his altitude while landing at Mars Hill Airport in Indianapolis at 10:45PM and crashed resulting in a fire with loss of both pilot and airplane. About 85% of the mail (much of which was damaged) was salvaged and forwarded to its addressees with a notice applied to each cover reading "DAMAGED IN PLANE CRASH INDIANAPOLIS, IND. Nov. 2, 1929 ROBT. H. BRYSON, P.M." |
