Description |
The Crary Building was designed in 1908 by the Spokane firm of Cutter & Malmgren and was one of the city's more outstanding examples of Chicago School architecture. It was built by the Washington Securities Company, formed in 1906 by James W. Clise and backed by Eastern capitalists. Building permits were filed for this building in May 1908 and it was ready for occupancy that December. Later owned by the C.D. Stimson Company, the building was demolished in 1941 to be inexplicably replaced by a squat 2-story modernist building known as the New Crary Building, designed by William Henry Fey and Paul Thiry. The building to the right was designed and built at the same time for Sparkman & McLean by the short-lived partnership of Van Siclen, Swope & Waterman. It was reduced to two floors at the same time as the New Crary Building's construction. Both that and the New Crary Building still stand today but were remodeled beyond recognition in the early 1970s to blend with the adjacent hotel tower, currently known as Motif.
