Summary
[edit]DescriptionCraignethan Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1417200.jpg |
English: Craignethan Castle In the foreground is the caponier, a "defensive, vaulted gallery with loopholes" www.scotcolour.com/castles/craignethan.htm and the "only surviving example of its type in Britain" http://www.darkisle.com/c/craignethan/Craignethan.html , only discovered in 1964. Crossing the ditch between the inner and outer courtyards, it allowed defenders to pick off any invaders who had made it that far. Beyond is the outer courtyard. The building in the southwest corner is Andrew Hay's House (1665), a two-storey dwelling; Hay had bought the castle in 1659. |
