Cpl. Christian Wagner (CP 900), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Corporal Christian Wagner, Co. G, 9th New York Cavalry, shows the stump of his leg following an amputation. His leg was amputated as the result of a gunshot wound received at the Battle of Petersburg, March 21, 1865. Caption reads: “Amputation of thigh.” Photograph by R.B. Bontecou. History is on reverse: "Christian Wagner. Hospital Number, 20,388. Christian Wagner. Corpl. Co., G 9th N.Y. Cav. Age 20 was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, with an amputation of the thigh performed in consequence in gun shot wound received at Petersburg, Va., March 21st. When admitted the patient was doing well and continued to do well until the night of April, 14th when symptoms indicating the approach of tetanus made their appearance these symptoms disappeared under the application of sulphate of morph to the wound and its administration by the mouth. The wound is now, May, 1st, healing kindly. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B.
