Summary
[edit]DescriptionCowarts Post Office, Caney Fork, NC (43552719904).jpg | This building may not look like much now, but it was once a vibrant hub of the local community when it was the Cowarts Post Office and a small community store, which served most of Caney Fork at least into the 1950s. The small cinderblock building is very similar in design, features, and form to the post offices that once served nearby Glenville, East LaPorte, and Cullowhee, all of which date to the same time period. The simple building features a main entrance door flanked by two windows, likely three-over-one windows that were popular at the time, and a small, separate door for mail service, as was postal service regulation at the time. Likely built during the interwar period, the building is very simple, with exposed rafter beams, a craftsman style flourish that was popular at the time of construction. The post office operated here until consolidation of postal services in the 1950s led to the closure of this post office, along with many other rural post offices in the county, including the one at Speedwell and the one at East LaPorte. Since that time, it does appear the building has had some upkeep, and likely continued life as a store at least a decade or two beyond the time it was used by the postal service, but has more recently fallen into disuse, and is showing some signs of weathering. The increased ease of travel to the nearby towns and more heavily populated areas has put many stores like the one that operated here out of business in the county. Soon, I expect the old post office building to vanish into memory, much like the old Johns Creek Elementary School across the road, the store that once operated here, and the name given to this once-remote outpost of the United States Postal Service. |
