English: Cow Gate Weir, Lathkill Dale. Much of the river below here disappears in summer droughts,caused in part by historic lead mining.The miners dug a sough(drainage tunnel)which lowered the water table, enabling them to dig deeper.Work now being done involves measuring the flow in the Dale, both above and below ground. See 717133 where the river starts to appear above ground, and another view of this weir1008586 with the river in full flow |
