Summary
[edit]DescriptionCovered Gate, St. Mary's, Potsgrove - geograph.org.uk - 372494.jpg |
English: Covered Gate, St. Mary's, Potsgrove This rustic-looking little roofed gateway leads into the churchyard of St. Mary's church in Potsgrove (see 370576 370570 & 370561)
Such gates at the entrance to churchyards are often called lychgates, from the Old English "lic" meaning corpse. This is because this is where a coffin would await the arrival of the clergyman - the little roof being to keep the coffin (and presumably its attendants) dry. However, this particular specimen is such a small structure that the coffin would have to have lain sideways, so I'll categorise it as simply a gate. |
