Summary
[edit]DescriptionCourse of a Roman road - geograph.org.uk - 1588211.jpg |
English: Course of a Roman road. The course of the road is marked on the OS map, but there is little to be seen on the ground. Part of the section that traverses Tor Wood is clearly evident in satellite imagery (e.g., a 420-metre section can be followed from NS 8335 8464 to NS 8309 8497), but it is much less so at ground level.
However, a much easier way to be certain of standing on the course of the road is to enter the woods that lie just east of Torwood Castle; where the road passes through the woods, the trees have been thinned out considerably. This is presumably the result of woodland management, but it does at least provide a useful visual indication of the location of the road. This photo was taken near the northern edge of the road, looking SE along its course. The denser woods that lie outwith the road are visible on the left. As the picture shows, the clearing comes to an end a short distance ahead; on the other side of a fence, there is a field that is in agricultural use, so that no remains are visible there: 1588177. For a section of the road that is out in the open, see 1588253. |
