Summary
[edit]DescriptionCourse of a Roman Road - geograph.org.uk - 1588253.jpg |
English: Course of a Roman Road. See 1588211 for the main discussion of this road.
Most of the course of the road is concealed within woodland; this photo shows one of the few parts that are out in the open. Specifically, the road corresponds to the area that is covered in bracken (on which, compare the comments at 1420879). The near edge of the road is well delineated by the bracken, and therefore crosses the photo obliquely from left to right; the road is fairly wide, and therefore, even here, most of its surface lies further back, within the woods. In 1962, two sections of the road (namely, the exposed part shown here, and a similar exposed section that crosses an open area just north of Torwood Castle) were given statutory protection by being declared a Scheduled Ancient Monument. |
