r is permitted to schedule with a team that does not agree to alike standard, and any contract is void when a visiting team fails topresent, before the beginning of the game, a list of its eligible playersbearing the signature of the principal of the school it represents. Every student in school is a member of this association by virtueof a fee of one dollar paid at the time of enrollment each term. Inreturn for this fee the student has free use of athletic equipment andfree admission to all games held under the auspices of the association. Tennis, basketball and baseball are the forms of athletics regu-larly supported. SHEPHERD COLLEGE ORCHESTRA Several members of the school, in conjunction with citizens of thetown, form this musical organization. Much of the music for enter-tainments during the year and for Commencement is furnished by theorchestra. The school furnishes most of the instruments and instruc-tion is free, and in other ways the school encourages this worthyorganization.

Student Publications THE SHEPHERD COLLEGE PICKET The Shepherd College Picket is a wide-awake school paper editedby the students of the school with the approval of the faculty. It ispublished each month during the school year — ten numbers. Itsmotto is To interest all in our affairs and to show what kind of workis being done at Shepherd College. It affords much excellent literarywork for the students who belong to the staff of editors or write forits columns. This sprightly school paper has reached its twenty-firstyear. The first issue was given to the public Thursday, January 30,1896. Since then the publication has been much improved and is in-creasing in usefulness. The Picket management takes this means tothank friends, alumni, students and business men whose liberal sup-port in various ways has made its existence possible in the past, andhopes that such favors will be extended in the future.
