Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This maps gives an idea of the countries (red) in which Wikipedia-articles containing images (from Wikimedia Commons) related to the National library of the Netherlands (KB), have been consulted (dd 30-9-2013)

How was this map made?

  • All Commons images about the collections/buildings/history/directors/projects/events etc. of the KB have been aggregated in the Category:Royal Library, The Hague on 30-9-2013.
  • Then the GLAMorous tool with "Search depth=5" was run on this Category (Copy-paste this URL: http://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous.php?doit=1&category=Royal+Library%2C+The+Hague&use_globalusage=1&ns0=1&depth=5&show_details=1&projects[wikipedia]=1
  • The resulting list of Wikipedia language versions (thus all containing images from Category:Royal Library, The Hague) was then mapped as well as possible to corresponding countries.
For some Wikipedia versions this was easy, as there is a very strong correlation between language and country (for instance Polish/Poland or Bulgarian/Bulgaria). For other languages this mapping is not as straightforward. Spanish is for instance sproken in Spain, as well as across South & Central America, making it hard to pinpoint the exact country in which a Spanish language Wikipedia article is being read.
As the author took some liberties in the language -->countries mapping, the resulting choice of red countries on the worldmap is to some extent debatable. Nevertheless, it gives an pretty good idea in which "remote corners" of the world the images related to the KB are being seen.
