Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cottingham Castle, Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
An octagonal brick tower which was once part of "Cottingham Castle", a manor house owned by Thomas Thompson which stood here until the late 19th century (the actual castle or fortified manor at Cottingham, recorded in 1170 and also known as Baynard's Castle, was further east between Northgate and Hallgate). Castle Hill Hospital would later cover most of the site of Thompson's manor house, a foundation stone being laid by King George V in the new hospital administration building on 26th June 1914. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/644354 Two days later Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo in Bosnia, an event which marked the start of the First World War.
