Summary

English: Cottesmore: former ironstone quarries At one time, much of this square was quarried for ironstone. Cottesmore North Quarry, west of the Cottesmore to Market Overton Road, opened in 1949 and eventually extended from here to Barrow. At first the ore was taken to the main line Cottesmore Sidings (SK887137 - now Rutland Railway Museum) by a steam-operated narrow-gauge railway; lorries, which were considered more economical, replaced the railway in 1957. The OS Map shows the "lorry road" leading to the tipping dock at Cottesmore Sidings. |
