Miss Constance Collier as Viola wore a dressof grey embroidered with silver, the cap of scarlettossing a blue tassel, while her pouch of crimsonvelvet embroidered with gold had peculiar slits orpockets for weapons, and her sleeves hung wing-likein exact copy of the Albanian costume, a happyidea, since the Illyria of Shakespeare is the Albaniaof to-day. Desdemona, as played by Miss Gertrude Elliotin Forbes Robertsons production of Othello at theLyceum Theatre, was a sweet and dainty creatureindeed, wearing the palest of colours, white, paleblue and silver, and gold, with a trellis of pearls onher fair head, and ribbons and pearls entwined inher flowing locks. MISS GERTRUDE ELLIOT AS DESDEMONA. 254 COSTUME CHAP. XX Veroniqiie, the first of a new series of comicoperas with a plot, was remarkable altogether forits exquisite frocks. No prettier harmony couldhave been imagined than the chrysoprase-greenand white of the first act, unless it be the manygradations of pink, cerise, and red which graced thelast act in company with a little band of maidensclad in pale-lemon colour. The picture ofVeronique shows her with the close lace capthreaded with little green ribbons, and with shortsoft glace sacque trimmed with ribbons, and thisshe wore in the famous swing scene, where thedaintiest of little early Victorian brides danced inwhite muslin and a poke bonnet under the shade ofpink and white chestnut trees. The Othello of my picture is wearing a dress ofthick woollen fabric in deep cream tone ; his headis bound with a white turban, in which greenlyglistens a huge emerald, emeralds being embroideredon the sleeves interspersed with a design of red silk
