Notes Child's fancy dress costume, 1915, representing Lord Nelson Costume worn by Leslie Smytheman (then aged 6 years) at Children's Day Parade held at Auckland Domain c December 1915. This was part of a Queen Carnival fund-raising function, raising funds for the Wounded Soldiers Fund. The Weekly News Supplement of 3 December 1915 includes a photograph of Leslie in his outfit. The costume was made by Leslie Smytheman's mother who attached the wig to the hat when the costume was later worn by Leslie Smytheman's daughter. The Weekly News account of the Auckland Queen Carnival records that the events raised over 300,000 pounds for the Wounded Soldiers Fund. “One of the most successful of all the Auckland Queen Carnival events was the floral fete with which ‘Childrens Day’ was celebrated. Upwards of 10,000 boys and girls from the schools of the city and suburbs took part in this striking effort to assist the Wounded Soldiers Fund through the Soldiers’ Queen, Mrs JA Wallingford.” (Weekly News 3-12-1915)
