N a certain forest there once lived afox, and near to the fox lived a manwho had a cat that had been a goodmouser in its youth, but was now oldand half blind. The man didnt wantpuss any longer, but not liking tokill it, took it out into the forest andlost it there. Then the fox came up and said : Why,Mr. Shaggy Matthew ! How dye do ! What bringsyou here ? — Alas ! said Pussy, my master lovedme as long as I could bite, but now that I can bite nolonger and have left off catching mice—and I usedto catch them finely once—he doesnt like to killme, but he has left me in the wood where I mustperish miserably.— No, dear Pussy ! said the fox ; you leave it to me, and Ill help you to get yourdaily bread.— You are very good, dear little sisterfoxey! said the cat, and the fox built him a littleshed with a garden round it to walk about in.

132 COSSACK FAIRY TALES. Now one day the hare came to steal the manscabbage. Kreem-kreem-kreem ! he squeaked. Butthe cat popped his head out of the window, and whenhe saw the hare, he put up his back and stuck uphis tail and said : Ft-t-t-t-t-Frrrrrrr ! The harewas frightened and ran away and told the bear, thewolf, and the wild boar all about it. Never mind,said the bear, I tell you what, well all four give abanquet, and invite the fox and the cat, and do forthe pair of them. Now, look here ! Ill steal themans mead ; and you, Mr. Wolf, steal his fat-pot; andyou, Mr. Wildboar, root up his fruit-trees; and you,Mr. Bunny, go and invite the fox and the cat todinner. So they made everything ready as the bear hadsaid, and the hare ran off to invite the guests. Hecame beneath the window and said : We invite yourlittle ladyship Foxey-Woxey, together with Mr. ShaggyMatthew, to dinner —and back he ran again.— Butyou should have told them to bring their spoons withthem, said the bear.— Oh
