Summary
[edit]DescriptionCosmic-like landscape inclusions in a gem spinel.png |
English: In gemology, inclusions in gemstones are very important for the gemologist to be able to identity their nature (natural or synthetic), if they have been subjected to any treatment, and in some cases, their geographic origin. Inclusions in gemstones may also be at the origin of some amazing photomicrographs when they display cosmic shapes, stunning contrast or bright colors. To this end I study gemstones inclusions as well as take their pictures under a microscope in order to reveal and share their hidden inner beauty. This image shows a very rare inclusion made of a cotton-like stellar whitish cloud surrounding an octahedral shaped negative crystal, along with some highly reflective oriented crystals lying within a natural 2.11 carats dark purple spinel.
Technical Description : this photomicrograph was made with a natural natural 2.11 carats dark purple spinel seen through a gemological trinocular optical stereomicroscope (Motic GM 171-T) at magnification x80 under dark-field illumination, helped on the side by two powerful fiber optic illuminators (LED). In order to get a satisfactory depth of field to highlight most details, this image, done with the DSLR Canon Z6, is the result of the stacking in Photoshop of 42 images taken along Z axis.
