Description

On 26 May 1966 British Guiana achieved independence from the United Kingdom and was renamed as Guyana. The nation of Guyana is a sovereign state on the Caribbean coast of South America. Although Guyana is part of the Anglophone Caribbean, it is one of the few Caribbean countries that are part of South America. Guyana was originally colonised by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British colony, known as British Guiana, and remained so for over 150 years until it achieved independence.

The correspondence shown here relates to the New Zealand reaction to Guyanese independence, including a press release from New Zealand Prime Minister Keith Holyoake, detailing what gifts New Zealand will offer to Guyana to mark their independence. The gifts New Zealand offered were 2 dispatch boxes, 2 letter racks and a set of 50 New Zealand books. The 2nd piece of correspondence is from the Guyana High Commission in London, thanking New Zealand for the gifts. This correspondence is from files transferred to Archives New Zealand by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
