Summary

[edit]
Description

On 14 March 1915, the First World War naval Battle of Más a Tierra was fought near the Chilean Island of Más a Tierra.

The SMS Dresden, a German light cruiser, had escaped the Battle of the Falkland Islands and taken refuge in neutral Chilean waters, anchoring in Cumberland Bay near Más a Tierra. It was found by British squadron made up of the cruisers HMS Kent and Glasgow, along with the auxiliary cruiser Orama, and fired upon. The Dresden eventually exploded, but it is unclear whether the explosion was caused by the firing from the British ships or from scuttling charges set off by the Germans. Three Germans were killed in action and 15 wounded. The surviving crew were interned by Chile until the end of the war.

The Chilean government protested that the British had broken international law by attacking an enemy combatant in neutral waters. This Parliamentary Paper was forwarded to the New Zealand government via Lord Liverpool, who was Governor of New Zealand at that time. It includes the letter of protest from the Chilean government and how they understood the event to have taken place, and a reply by the British government.
