Corporal Edward Scott (CP 1855), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: "Corporal Edward Scott, 10th U.S. Cavalry. Shot by Apaches at Sierra Pinito, Mexico, May 3rd, 1885. Thigh amputated May 8th, 1886. Operator: Paul R. Brown, M.D. [Illegible] surgeon, U.S.A." Corporal Scott was a "Buffalo Soldier," who was injured at the Battle of Pinito Pass, Mexico, after being sent to chase down Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo and his men. According to some accounts, the shot shattered Corporal Scott's leg, and he rode seven miles without complaint to be treated.
