Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Though life was tough in 19th century NZ, small towns like Akaroa had thriving social and cultural lives. In 1863, a group of residents formed a Literary and Scientific Institute.

After meeting for some years in the Town Hall, the group needed larger premises of its own. So it built this building (at 103 Rue Jolie), which opened in 1875.

It served as a library as well as the Institute's meeting place. In 1911 it was renovated. With funds available for a memorial for the coronation of George V, it was raised on new foundations, its roof repaired and its frontage renewed, which gave the building an English Domestic Revival look. Its name was changed to Akaroa Coronation Library to mark the coronation.
