Description For GWUK. Corfe Castle, Dorset. A stronghold that has witnessed much history. Begun by William the Bastard [or Conqueror if you prefer] after 1066, much used by mediaeval kings such as John and Edward I, it eventually passed to the Bankes family, supporters of Charles I during the Civil War, and finished up destroyed by the Parliamentary army in 1643 after a long siege. This resulted in the stately ruin we see today, run by the <a href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-corfecastle.htm" rel="noreferrer nofollow">National Trust</a>.
