Description |
English: "A dwarf is seated at the right, with the Boboli Gardens behind him; beyond the amphitheater part of the Fortezza del Belvedere appears on the skyline to the left. On his lap he holds a red hat-box from which a small terrier emerges and in his left hand he holds a spaniel by its lead. Eleven other dogs, variously decorated with bows and elaborate collars, frolic beside him. The painting is a nineteenth century copy of a much superior work, itself bought from Spence in 1870 by the Duke of Westminster, which was sold at Sotheby’s as by Tiberio di Titi. The dwarf wears a gold chain and a bronze portrait medal, which is not identifiable in either version, however in the Westminster version the collar of one dog bears a semi-legible coat-of-arms which suggests that the kennel belonged to one of the Medici daughters." |
