Title |
Copper alloy post medieval George III coin weight |
||
Description |
English: A cast, copper alloy coin weight dating from 1740-1770AD. It is double sided, each side bearing a raised inscription reading S 36, indicating that it was used to weigh the Portuguese gold 4 escudos, valued then at thirty six shillings. It is 23.3mm in diameter and weighs 14.19gm. This find was recorded from an export licence and there is therefore no accurate measurement of the thickness available. Identical examples are illustrated in Withers, Lions, Ships and Angels, page 53. |
