Title
Copper alloy medieval thimble
Description
English: A copper alloy Medieval thimble which has been flattened. It is 31.2mm long, 24.1mm wide and 14.4mm thick. The thimble appears to have had a flat top. The rim is unthickened and undecorated. The sides and top are covered with indentations arranged in a spiral. The indentations on the top are clearly circular, but on the sides they appear oval because they have been formed on an angle, from the top of the thimble downwards. Many of them have corroded through into holes. The centre of the top is bare apart from three circular indentations arranged in a large triangular shape. There does not appear to be a maker’s mark. The thimble has a deep green glossy patina. It probably dates form the late fifteenth century (McConnell and Geake).
