Title
Copper alloy medieval thimble
Description
English: Complete copper alloy thimble. This object is circular in plan and domed in section with a slightly pointed crown. The circumference of the open end has a defined rim with two parallel incised lines around; the bottom line tends to ‘run off’ the bottom of the thimble. The rim is vertically split at one point, for about 2mm. Other splits on the rim appear to be damage. The open end is slightly bent out of its true circle. The crown has a small bare circular portion. The rest of the thimble is covered with concentric circles of hand-punched dots that continue all the way to the rim. The punched dots are of similar size, and the rings are fairly uniform. The original surface survives only in patches with a mid green patina. Exposed surfaces are lighter green. The thimble is 13.56mm long, has a rim diameter of 17.46mm. It weighs 2.06g. It is similar to Holmes’s light duty type A (Finds Research Group Datasheet 9) and certainly the thin nature of the thimble walls suggest it was not up to heavy work. It dates from the mid 14th to mid 15th century.
