Title |
Copper alloy medieval strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy medieval belt hanger. The uppermost feature of the piece is a heavily stylised zoomorphic (possibly dog's) head, which has a pronounced nose, deeply-grooved mouth and a flat underside. The neck extends vertically downwards into a basal loop. The end of this part has been lost but on other examples: At its end, the loop terminates in a vertically-aligned rectangular frame. This latter element is probably the hole through which the belt passed.
Cfr: PAS, find number: BH-4A9D88. Several examples of this category of artefact are recorded on the PAS datbase - see, for example, NMS-1EEA45, NMS-D99313 and IOW-7A0A93. There is also an unprovenanced example in the London Museum collection. It is suggested that they may have served to suspend a sword from a belt. |
