Title
Copper alloy handle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy dagger handle, probably dating to the 17th or 18th century. The handle is rectangular in cross-section, hollow, and has an everted rim at either end. The lower rim has an instepped collar extending from it with a notch on either side showing where the blade or tang would have rested. The handle is missing its guard, which is now represented by two incomplete circular stubs extending from the side. The two other sides are decorated with a moulded scene. The scene is somewhat difficult to determine, but each side appears to show the same thing. There is a figure, perhaps a male, standing in the centre shown face on. The figure is dressed in the typical 'Tudor-skirt' and the head is shown looking to the ?right. There are two futher figures to the left shown side-on facing each other, and this is repeated to the right of the central figure also. The figures appear to be locking arms suggesting a dance scene, though this equally could be representing an erotic scene. A complete example from Wales is recorded on the database as NMGW-F5FC71.
