Title
Copper alloy and enamel Limoges fitting
Description
English: A copper alloy and enamel casket or altar cross fitting dating to the twelfth or thirteenth centuries AD. The style and decoration of the fitting is characteristic of ecclesiastical metalwork produced at Limoges, France in the medieval period. The fitting is hemispherical and hollow in section with a folded over base. There are two circular perforations in the body of the fitting. It is in the shape of a robed saint and appears to have been originally gilded. A small fragment of gilding is visible on the neck area of the fitting. The fitting is also decorated with enamel. The folds of the saint's clothes are picked out in triangular cells filled with pale blue, red or yellow/pale green enamel. The head of the saint is hemispherical but solid in section. A moulded ridge represents hair and eyes are picked out as dark blue glass or enamel. There is red enamel below the eyes and in the grooved mouth area. The surface of the fitting is degraded and very corroded in places. It measures 64mm in length and 20mm in width.
