Title |
Copper alloy Roman TOT ring |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy finger ring, Henig type XI. The ring has a broad flat bezel with tapering D-shaped hoop. The bezel is decorated with a double rectilinear border, containing the letters TOT. The letters are very worn.
Finger rings with the letters ‘TOT’ inscribed on the bezel are a distinctive group with a distribution very much centred on the county of Lincolnshire, although stray finds are known from as far north as York and as far south as Battlesden in Bedfordshire. The letters TOT are an abbreviation for the Celtic god-name Toutatis, or Teutatis, a deity whom was often conflated with the Roman god Mars. |
