Title |
Copper alloy Early Medieval strap end with silver decorated plate |
||
Description |
English: An Anglo-Saxon strap end, copper alloy and covered with decorated silver plating. The lower back plate is torn. There are four rivets on the back plate and one of the original ones fixing the piece to a strap. The shape is the traditional oblong with a rounded-eared animal head at one end and two rivets at the split end. The strap end belongs to a class of widely used objects in Anglo-Saxon England. Some of these were made of silver, sometimes gilt and finely decorated. This piece imitates rich artefacts in precious metal and covers a copper alloy core with silver-plate embellished with an incised decoration in a framed panel of two backward-looking animals. The type of creatures and the added lines suggest an imitation of the fashionable trewhiddle style (for strap ends with zoomorphic Trewhiddle-style decoration dating to the 9th century see L. Webster and J. Backhouse (eds) The Making of England, London 1991, nos 191-94), particularly considering the traces of niello that survive on the surface. When new the strap-end would have presented a contrast of silver and black. The strap end is 8mm long, 4.5mm wide and weighs 5.72g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the strap-end conducted at the British Museum indicated a silver content for the decorated white metal plate of approximately 75 %, copper and lead were also detected and there are some traces of niello in the design. The backing plate is copper with lead and a few percent of zinc. |
