Title |
Copper alloy Early Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle. The buckle frame is oval in plan. The frame is circular in section with a flattened inner edge. The pin bar is narrowed. The pin survives and is 12.92mm long. It is simply curled around the pin bar, is sub circular in section and tapers to a broad, blunt point. The frame is 20.54mm long and 20.68mm wide. The hoop is 3.42mm wide and 3.4mm thick. The buckle weighs 2.41g. A similar buckle has been recorded as SOMDOR-172678. Here Dr Kevin Leahy comments that the simple form may date from the 7th to 9th centuries. Other examples can be seen in MacGregor and Bolick, 1993, A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo Saxon Collections (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), page 203. |
