Title
Copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian sword pommel
Description
English: Copper-alloy pommel from a sword. The base of the pommel is curved. The pommel has five curved lobes increasing in height towards the centre, each seperated by a narrow moulded rib. The central lobe is larger than the four side lobes, and has a rectangular perforation to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There are no rivets and the pommel was presumably held in place simply by the hammered tang. The pommel has a mid green patina with a yellowish-brown patina within the recessed areas, in particular either side of the ribs. The pommel is in a good state of preservation. Late early-medieval pommels (Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian) were last thoroughly studied by Petersen in 1919. This one is a Petersen L type VI pommel, a fusion of Anglo-Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon fashions, and dates to the 10th or 11th century. The pommel measures 53mm in length, 17mm in width with a casing thickness of 2mm, and a hight of 22mm. The tang hole measures 6mm by 5mm.
